Description

Alnus incana (Grey alder). A fast-growing, tall, deciduous upright tree which will produce catkins and has a smooth, dark grey bark. The ovate, toothed leaves are dark and glossy green above, paler green below.

Interest and use

Often used in land reclamation in areas of dry and poor soil, such as old spoil heaps where it fixes nitrogen and consolidates the soil. Planted as windbreaks, hedging and useful for screening. An early source of pollen for bees and the 'cones' provide food for the birds.
