Alnus incana ‘Ramulis Coccineis’ (Alder). This cultivar has red winter shoots and buds, smooth leaf undersides and orange catkins.

Interest and use

Often used in land reclamation in areas of dry and poor soil, such as old spoil heaps where it fixes nitrogen and consolidates the soil. Planted as windbreaks, hedging and useful for screening. An early source of pollen for bees and the 'cones' provide food for the birds.
