Description

Alnus nepalensis (Nepalese alder). This is a deciduous or semi-deciduous tree with a straight, silver-grey trunk, which can grow up to 20m in height. The leaves are shiny dark green, simple and shallowly toothed. This tree flowers in autumn and the seeds ripen over the following year. A pioneer species.

Subtropical highlands of Himalayas: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Yunnan S. W. China.

Interest and use

The wood is used as fuel, light construction, furniture, turnery, traditional medicine, dying and tanning. The trees are planted for erosion control.
