Description

Alnus viridis (Green alder). This is a deciduous Alder which forms a rounded bush or a multi-stemmed small tree. It has smooth grey bark and shiny green leaves with pale green undersides. It produces yellow male catkins of up to 8cm in length, which are covered in fragrant silver resin during the winter.

Interest and use

In gardens it is used as a windbreak and for screening.

In forestry, it is often grown as a pioneer species to reclaim poor soils for future more commercially useful timber crops.
