Description

Hydrangea aspera ‘Macrophylla’ (Rough-leaved hydrangea). This species is tall and spreading. The large flowering clusters are deep purple-blue with pale powder-blue on the outer edges. The foliage is comprised of large silvery-green leaves with a downy undersides. This species will prefer moist soil in a partially shaded setting.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will prefer sun or semi-shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. They will require more shade in dry areas; provide shelter from cold, drying winds. Some hydrangeas become chloritic in shallow chalk soil.

Propagation

Propogate by softwood cuttings in summer or seeds in spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Watch for powdery mildew, leaf spot, honey fungus and aphids, scale insects and red spider mites.
