Description

Hydrangea aspera var. sargentiana (Rough-leaved hydrangea). This deciduous, upright shrub bears peeling bark, stout shoots with oval, medium green leaves. Has corymbs of white, flushed purple flowers in late summer to mid autumn.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will prefer sun or semi-shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. They will require more shade in dry areas; provide shelter from cold, drying winds. Some hydrangeas become chloritic in shallow chalk soil.

Propagation

Propogate by softwood cuttings in summer or seeds in spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Watch for powdery mildew, leaf spot, honey fungus and aphids, scale insects and red spider mites.
