Description

Hypericum genus (St John's wort). These are perennials and deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen sub-shrubs and shrubs. There are about 400 species. The flowers are showy and will bloom in shades of yellow. These are low-growing shrubs in mounded shapes; they will bear fragrant yellow flowers in the summer. Grow them in well drained soil with full sun.

Interest and use

Grown for their conspicuous, yellow flowers with prominent stamens. This shrub is very attractive to bees.

Propagation

By softwood cuttings in summer sub-shrubs and shrubs or by seed in autumn, cultivators by softwood cuttings only in summer; perennials may be propagated by seed or division in autumn or spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

H.inodorum 'Elstead' is susceptible to rust, which produces orange spots on leaves, and H.'Hidcote' is prone to a virus that makes leaves narrow and variegated.
