Can anyone tell me if this is a weed, a Spurge or what?

About this time last year two new plants I have never seen before appeared in my border. They must have self seeded, but I have nothing else like them in the garden?

Since then they have grown prolifically and are now both over a metre tall. They look like to me like a Euphorbia (Spurge). Can anyone tell if they are and, if so, what variety?

Thanks

Caper spurge, Euphorbia lathyris, a weed in my opinion. Although having said that, a weed is only a plant in the wrong place. It's all down to taste.
Remember to wear gloves when handling, the sap is harmful.

That's great thanks. I've now just looked E. lathyris up more widely on the Web and it's quite interesting. Certainly poisonous and thought to deter moles, the plant apparently has a high hydrocarbon content which means it could be a green source of petroleum, if grown in enough quantity.

I also read that beggars used to rub the leaves on their skin to produce unsightly skin sores that would help them raise money from pitying passers by.

Hmm, not for my garden I think! With gloves I'll uproot and burn the plants before they release seed.

    Thank you Angie!
