Fuchsia Variety to ID please!

  • Fuchsia Variety to ID please!

Can anyone identify this Fuchsia variety please. Mum bought it back in the 70's & its moved house x3's reliably hardy. Though usually knock down to the ground by frost most years. Many thanks I have tried for years scouring varieties searching for it! The closest match is 'purple patch' but this I think is a relatively new variety?

Try var Mrs popples which looks like your picture and has been around a long time.

Yes I agree with that my wife always refers to it as her Moms fuschia

Thank you but I have recently bought Mrs Popple variety, although similar the flowers & leaves are appear distinctly different. I'll try when it's light to put the two together for a comparative photo to see what you think. Thanks again Clive

Sorry still awaiting buds to open on Mrs Popple.

I would have said "Mrs Popple" without hesitation! It's been around for so long, and is so reliable, comes back every year: one of my favourites. Is it possible that the one you bought recently might have been labelled "Mrs Popple" but is actually a modern cultivar?

Mrs Popple is the first buds opening, tried to get buds opening on the one I'm not sure of. Wondered whether it could be 'Brutus' or 'Dr Foster' or another either way I'm fairly sure they are different? Shame a lot of varieties look so similar.

Finally found it after trawling through the photos of the Fuchsia Society "The President" but thanks for the help anyway!

Well done for your persistence, Clive - I haven't encountered "The President" in any of my gardens, but I imagine that there are hundreds of cultivars which I haven't seen yet!

Thanks Rachel, I'm surprised you haven't it such a great plant reliably hardy & a good doer in the right spot. Prefers a little more sun than other fuchsia's & plenty of mulch in spring but looks great from late June till first frost & doesn't need dead heading!

Well, let's be honest, Clive: there is every chance that I've seen it in a dozen gardens and assumed it to be Mrs Popple!

Can wholeheartedly understand as there seems little difference between many of them, except when you have the two together. That's why I bought Mrs Popple to compare the fuchsia.com, simplzzz lol!
