Handling Seeds - tips needed

Hi All,
I have seeds collected from Phormium, Agapanthus and Calla Lily but don't really know how to handle them for best germination. Should they be dried and planted in spring or planted fresh and kept over winter. Any experience shared very welcome. Thanks

Hi Anne, you can look up each type of seed by typing into your search box the name of the plant, and the words seed and germination.

As a general rule, most seed germinate best if you mimic their natural process, so sowing them fresh is usually best. A lot of them won't germinate until the following spring, so remember to label them!

If in doubt, I always suggest sowing some of the seed now, and saving some until spring, then you can compare the germination rates and see what works best.

It is often worth taking the trouble to look them up, though, as some seeds have rather particular requirements: for instance, some of them benefit from soaking before sowing .
