Sensory Garden St Austell

  • Sensory Garden St Austell

I am 3/4 of the way through designing a sensory garden for Children's Hospice South West. I am working on a planting scheme and would be interested to hear from anyone who grows plants that they feel are very sensory. I do also have a theme, half the garden depicts a storm created by a mermaid so the plants need to look like the sea did last winter! The other side is a calm summer's day. My colours are yellow and blue. The hospice is on the Porthpean Road so is exposed to salty high winds; and, to add to that joy, there are a million rabbits waiting for a feast! I'll post some pictures soon. I am using the Plant Finder and am finding it a real help. It's great that when I find something I want the grower pops up alongside. Some of you will be hearing from me, especially those of you in Cornwall.

I know it's not yellow or blue but Crambe cordifolia would do a great job at depicting sea-spray and has a lush honey scent. Juncus effusus "Spiralis" might be good for either the mermaid's hair or for whirlpools. Also, Pennisetum villosum is lovely and fluffy. Also, Santolina chamaecyparissus is yellow, scented and has an interesting texture. Sounds like a fantastic project!| :-)

Thank you, Crambe is on my list all the others I'll explore, it is very exciting. I'm going to start posting pictures of the project soon. All thoughts welcome!

Sounds an amazing project! For crashing waves in a storm-tossed sea, its hard to beat Sorbaria (False Spirea). It gives you huge billowy white sprays of flowers in mid to late summer. This is a plant that needs space and will spread, but it tolerates almost any type of soil and can be cut back to the ground when it gets too much.

I will add a photo of Santolina to your post, as that's a great choice too.

What a lovely project, looking forward to some photos here when it’s all finished :-)

I have many plants in my garden I consider sensory, as I count scented plants as the most important sensory plants I can have. For me, lilies are the best scented flowers I can think of, but they are not very suitable for children. But lavender comes in all shades of blue, can be touched, crushed, stumbled on and still survive and smell absolutely lovely. Could they be either part of your sea or your calm summer’s day?

As for plants to touch, who can resist some strategically placed Lamb’s Ears?! Easy to fit into any colour scheme.

    Good Luck!

Thank you, both are in the garden and yes the lavender is being used in one place as the sea. I've used them before in another sensory garden and work very well.
