Evergreen shrub for half barrel

Can anyone recommend an easy to grow, low maintenance evergreen shrub for a half barrel container, ideally that attracts bees, etc?

How about a Gaultheria?Unusual, slow growing, small pointed glossy leaves all year round, flowers: and berries later on, if you buy a female plant and if there is a male plant somewhere nearby.

Or Luma apiculata, if it's in a sheltered spot: nice shiny leaves, interesting little white flowers in early autumn.

Otherwise, the usual suspects are Mahonia, Cotoneaster (lots to choose from), Hebe, or one of the Viburnums, although you'd need to pick a dwarf variety for a half-barrel.

Hope this gives you some ideas to start with!

Pittosporum tobira is a favourite of mine: good green leaves, architectural if you shape it, deliciously smelly cream flowers in summer and very easy care. I wrote piece about it a couple of years ago.

    Thanks both.
