Berberis attacked by Sawfly

  • Berberis attacked by Sawfly

This beauty looked as if it had been painted with small dashes of creamy white over its red leaf last year. Sadly this year it was decimated by the dreadful sawfly, which saw off a few of our berberis. We cut them down in the hope that a good prune will help them to flourish next year.

Lovely distinctive leaf. Plant it by the white wall of a house and you might think you had careless decorators!

Sawfly are a pain. You can pick them off, if you have the patience in April/May. Or position plants where birds will easily see the larvae and do it for you.

eeww I know I did start picking them off but by about 20 I was feeling sick, and went in with the bug killer, nothing worked. The plant is just recovering. Next year I will be ready, hopefully we will have a good frost and less of the pest :)

Meant to say Jeremy, laugh out loud on the white wall and decorators, good plan though.
