How to prune old Rose bush & transfer it elsewhere?

I want to try to move an old minature Rose bush that belonged to my late mum. Am not sure if its ever been pruned! Its at least 40 yrs old. If i cut it right back might it die? Or how & when can i cut it back. I have until end of March. The root system maybe too large to dig up, i have no experience of this!! Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated : )

Hi Suzi, it's going to be a bit of a challenge, but it's always worth trying!

I started typing out a great long "how to do it", but then had a strange feeling of deja vu - haven't I already written this out once? Answer, yes, it's here, if you don't mind a quick side trip to my blog.

In your case, I would cut back the top growth to about calf/ankle height, and take some time to cut out all the dead bits, and any thin weedy shoots: this will make it easier for you to work around it, without being prickled to death!

    Hope this helps!

Hi Rachel, Thank you so much !! I will read that article later. Can I ask you said the top growth to calf/ankle mean the whole bush to calf/ankle?

Hi Suzi, yes: I know it feels drastic/brutal but the plant will recover better without all that top growth, plus it's a great chance to get out all the clutter of dead stems and spindly growth.

I would also repeat a comment from the article to which I linked, which is to take cuttings, using the material that you prune off. I'd take at least 10: two pots of 5 cuttings in each. That way, there's a good chance that if the plant does not survive the experience, you will have cloned material, to maintain the sentimental link!
