time for picking varies depending on the weather so you will just have to watch your local trees should be very soon try and pick on a dry day for optimum flower viability, are you picking for cordial or wine making by any chance?

Hello Lesley thanks for your comments. I would love to pick elderflower in order to make cordial and wine making but I've no experience in finding the flower or where to find it! I live in the borough of Hillingdon and would love to meet fans for elderflower picking so I could hopefully join them to collect this lovely flower!

Elder seems to prefer hedgerows or woodland places with reasonably moist but well drained soil, often along footpaths with ditches or streams nearby. Try local field and woodland areas with footpaths, have a look at an OS map to identify likely areas, you can do that online quite easily. My girlfriend has an elder in her garden (in London) that is budding up really well at the moment, should be right for picking in about two weeks time. Cordial making with it is fairly simple, just needs lemons, sugar and perhaps a culinary acid of some sort to help it keep. Be careful if making 'champagne' with it though, when I was at school a friend of mine made some bottles and hid it under his bed, but one day, much to his mother's horror, they exploded!

Thanks I'd prefer to go along with someone that's familiar with picking the flowers. I think I know which is the rigt flower to pick it's just that it looks similar to others and I'd to pick the wrong thing!
