It's an easy and rather cool method of propagating a number of shrubby plants from just one. It works on plants such as heathers (Calluna and Erica), Kalmia, Lavandula, Pernettya, Rosmarinus and dwarf rhododendrons.

The best time to do it is now, in mid to late spring.

    We used to earth up rows of heathers years ago, before the wide use pots when they'd be sold bunched open ground. Worked pretty well I seem to recall. A ype of layering really.
