October gardening tasks

  • October gardening tasks

In October nights draw in, the sun weakens and the garden takes on Autumn colours. It's a perfect time to tidy up, execute any re-planning or planting before the first frosts, and make steps to improve the quality of your soil for next Spring.

This month is a good time to:

Sow grass seed or lay turf
Rake leaf build-up on lawns that can brown the grass (otherwise leave them to clear up in one go later in season)
Cover ponds with netting so leaves do not fall in
Make compost with spent plants, weeds (no roots), grass cuttings, hedge clippings, leaves, kitchen peelings
Turn compost once a week
Bring more tender pot plants inside, acclimatising them slowly to the warmth
Tie in new growth on climbers to prevent storm damage
Plant herbaceous plants so they get established before winter
Plant or transplant evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs
Plant out bulbs such as, Tulips, Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinths
Plant biennials like Viola, Sweet William, Canterbury Bell, Foxglove and Wallfowers
Plant out seedlings from hardy perennials once they're large enough
