Lots of trees are called 'Firs', and some of them are true Firs, but others are not. That's the problem with common names, they are confusing.

    Thank you! I always wondered if Fir was just an abbreviation of conifer. But now I'm better equipped to tell the differences between Firs, Spruce and Pine which are all conifers.

    There you go and I always thought it was to do with firring the timber. Pine being easy to shape.
