Where can I buy Helichrysum 'Icicles'?

  • Where can I buy Helichrysum 'Icicles'?

I have one in my garden but it only has one stem about 6cm long and I don't want to risk trying to do a cutting.

    Hi Djeban,

Did you find anyone withh this plant for sale? It's not something I have in any of my gardens, I'm afraid, but if you can't find another one, you should be able to take cuttings of the one you have, later on this year.

I think you are right not to risk the one stem that you have, but hopefully this year it will put on quite a lot of new growth, and you will able to sacrifice one stem for cuttings.

Even if it doesn't branch out very much this year - I assume it's a very new plant? - it should flower, and if it flowers, you can try sowing the seeds, which will take longer to produce new plants than cuttings would, buy should provide you with plenty of little plants.

    Good luck with it!

    Hi Rachel
The plant died back last winter and the single stem is all that was left all summer too. I only moved to the house at the end of 2014. I think the plant may be at the end of its life. I have covered it with a cloche in case it gets too cold.
I have found somewhere that sells Helichrysum Icicles seeds and have ordered some and hopefully I can grow a couple of plants. The seeds come in 250 seed packets!!!
    Thanks

Wow, 250! That should give you a garden-full of plants, and plenty spare to sell or swap here!

It also means that you have a chance to try different germination techniques - I love scientific experiements - you could start 10 or so seeds indoors, 10 outdoors in pots, 10 outdoors in the ground: then another 10 of each in a month's time, and again a month later, to see how long they take to germinate in these different locations. Remember to make notes, if you decide to try this - and good luck with it!

They are teeny weeny seeds! They have come with very comprehensive instructions but I shall give your ideas a try too and will make notes.
All the info I can find says they are easy to grow but very few places sell them and the only place I could find seeds was at www.seedaholic.com.

It's good that they come with instructions, but it's often worth experimenting a bit, too.

    Good luck with the germination!
