Meet and Swap Day in East London, Saturday 20th February

  • Meet and Swap Day in East London, Saturday 20th February

Do you live in or close to East London (E13)?
Do you need some free shrubs?
Can you come and dig out the shrubs yourself?
Would you like to meet some fellow growers from Green Plant Swap?
Would you like to swap some plants?
Are you free on Saturday the 20th February from 11am and onwards?

I am going to arrange a Meet and Swap Day for GPS growers in my garden on Saturday the 20th February and I hope to see you here!

Since moving house in May last year I have been trying to sort out my new garden, taking out all the plants I don’t want or need, ready for planting all the plants I took with me from my previous garden. Most of the plants are still in pots, waiting while I cut, prune, dig, lift, clear away and ponder about what to put where. The many mature shrubs that were here from before were just cut to the ground last summer, but are still perfectly fine and if lifted with enough root system they will grow up and become big, nice shrubs in no time.

-My plan is for GPS growers to come and meet here, dig up as many as possible of the shrubs I don’t need any more and they will be free to take away for anyone who wants them.

-This is also a great opportunity to bring a couple of plants with you for a swap with fellow growers, hopefully you will find something you like – I will have a few plants too for swapping.

-If anyone feel the urge for doing more digging after having lifted the shrubs I would be very grateful for any help, I have lots of potted plants still to go in the ground so every plant planted is a help, but the main thing is to get the shrubs I don’t need out of the ground.

-And most importantly – we all get to meet and have a chat with fellow gardeners, whether you are a novice or an expert makes no difference, having an interest for gardening is what matters. I have met people I now regard as friends through plant swapping, I hope a Meet and Swap Day like this will give us all new contacts, and you never know – you might meet someone living just around the corner from you.

If this is successful we could meet again in my garden - due to my disability I am not very mobile and don’t get out of the house very often so visiting other gardens and growers is not easy for me, but I am happy to be the host and have people here. I am not sure if this has been tried by GPS growers before, I might be the first making an open invitation like this – you will need to send me a message and let me know if you are a ‘maybe’ or a ‘definite’ and how many people I can expect.

The plants I have that needs digging out are:
-2 Spirea bushes, not sure variety but with pink flowers.
-3-4 Pyracantha bushes – all were 7-8 ft tall when I moved in but have been cut down several times since then.
-1 Buddleja – I think it was purple – it was massive!
-1 Forsythia – was tall as a tree, I cut it down last autumn
-2 evergreen bushes – I don’t know what they are, were around 6ft tall last summer.
-1 old rose, pink flowers, quite pretty, produces hips.
-1 Euonymus, not sure of variety
-Numerous Acanthus mollis plants dotted around the garden, digging deep will hopefully get rid of most of it – I don’t need any.
All these plants are cut down to the ground or almost to the ground so will be easy to take out and won’t take too much space to transport.

I am not going to set any restriction for where growers can come from, it’s up to you how far you want to travel, anyone a member of GPS can come. I appreciate that many people will look out of the window right now and see snow or have snow on their forecast and think ‘What? Digging in the garden now??’ We have no snow in London and although it will be cold this coming week there won’t be any snow. Hopefully my Meet and Swap Day will go ahead as planned, but it will be weather permitted so if it is raining it will be postponed to the Sunday, if it is raining that day too then we will try the following week-end.

I have been more or less absent from the GPS website for a year while moving house and garden and trying to get things sorted. I have been missing the contact with people here and I have certainly been missing swapping plants so now that I feel I things are moving on here with house and garden I hope to be back again with GPS. I have just updated my plant list to reflect the new garden and will be updating my swap list soon. Send me a message and let me know if you are coming on Saturday the 20th, I will send you contact details. Hope to see you!

Take care,
Helene

Hi Helene, I won't be able to join you, but I do wish you well, and hope that other GPS Growers can make it - it's a lovely idea, and a great way to meet like-minded people.

    Fingers crossed for decent weather!

    Thanks Rachel!
No one has signed up yet after this post, but I hope there will be people reading it this week-end and getting in touch :-)

Great idea Helene ... and lovely to hear you will be back in action on GreenPlantSwap. For those that are interested, and maybe are planning open gardens or plant sales for later in the year, we are midway through building a more complete and easy to use 'Create an Event' function to work on this page. It should be ready for launch by early April.

So watch this space, as they say. Best of luck with this event Helene.

Helene for obvious reasons I won't be able to make your event. This is a real pity because I'd love to come along and give you a hand, even just to dig.
I home the team don't mind me mentioning but does your area have a facebook page? I know many areas of Edinburgh do and have seen similar posts on there. A quick search and I found The East London Garden Society. They have a web page to but did not do much investigation after that.
Good luck with it all - I'm sure we'll read all about it here and on your blog.

    Hi Helene,

Thank you for the invite. Regrettably, I will be overseas during that time. I hope there's another opportunity like this again later in the year!

Thanks Angie, I would have loved to have a helping hand so it is a real shame you live so far away ;-) I know about the East London Garden Society, and there are other gardening clubs etc. – my problem is that I can’t really get out of the house for events like that so anything I can arrange at home is ideal – I don’t expect the first one to be a huge success but I am happy if just a few people turn up. Next time I can hope for a few more and so on.

Irfan, I also hope there will be another Meet and Swap Day later in the year, it is up to all of you - if we can get enough people together then I would like to have a day like this once a month, 10 months a year – and I would be happy to have it in my garden every time. I have space for it and I live close to public transport and have free parking outside. I guess this is a thing that can grow over time, will be exciting to see if anyone turns up next Saturday :-)

Hello Julia, nice to hear from you! I have messaged you separately with my contact details. At the moment the weather doesn’t look too promising for Saturday – a real shame since we have had gloriously weather all week here in London – so typical! I will make a final decision Friday morning - Sunday doesn’t look too good either, but at least no rain as it looks today – but that might change too, they have been changing the weather for the week-end every day and it has been nail-biting to keep track of it!

Next week-end is too far away to say yet so if we have to postpone we will just have to wait and see. I will post here Friday morning so anyone still interested gets a new chance to contact me.
