Meet and Swap Day in East London, E13

Past event 1-5PM Saturday 16 April 2016

19 Boyce Way, LONDON, E13 8DP

Open gardenPlant swap
  • Meet and Swap Day in East London, E13

I am having another Meet and Swap Day in my garden in Plaistow, London E13 on Saturday 16th April at 1pm – 5pm, and I hope there will be lots of people interested in coming. The Meet and Swap Day is for anyone interested in gardening, whether you are a total novice or an experienced gardener, having a tiny balcony space or a huge garden - everyone is welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet other GPS growers and have a chat with fellow plantaholics - and a good opportunity to do some swapping and get yourself some new plants. I will especially encourage people who are just starting out on their first garden to come along - chatting to people who has been gardening for a while is a very good way to pick up some tips, and you get the chance to ask questions. You can also bring with you photos on a phone or a pad to show problems or issues you might be struggling with and although there is no guarantee that your problem will be solved, we can always try to help.

Bring along spare plants to swap or sell, they can be potted mature plants or just small cuttings, seedlings, seeds or anything you are willing to part with. But don’t worry if you don’t have any spare plants right now, many of us have plants we are willing to sell instead of swap so you might be able to pick up something nice for a small price to take home.

The Meet and Swap Day is dependent on the weather so if the weather forecast is for rain I will postpone it to Sunday the 17th, same time. If it is raining that day too, it will be postponed to the following Saturday/Sunday. Keep an eye out for a post on Friday the 15th April confirming the date.

NB! This event is not a drop-in, please send me a message using the green button to the right side of this page and let me know whether you are a maybe or a definite for the Meet and Swap Day. (The Send Message button is under the map.) I have a rather small garden so I will have to set a maximum limit of 20 people – book yourself a space as soon as you can!

Hope to see you in my garden!
Helene

UPDATE 12.04.

The Meet and Swap Day will be going ahead on Saturday the 16th at 1-5pm.
The weather forecast has been changing every time I have looked at it the last week, and I assume it will keep changing, there might be some short showers on Saturday but that’s April for you!
I still have plenty of available spaces so just send me a message if you would like to come and meet some fellow growers and perhaps do some plant swapping.

    Hello Lynne

Thanks for signing up to the Meet and Swap Day, since you don’t have a grower page yet, could you please send me a message using the green button on the right side of this page? Just send me a message and copy and paste what you wrote here. I just need a message from you so I will be able to contact you to confirm the date, as it might be postponed till the day after if it is going to rain all day Saturday.
Thanks, look forward to seeing you!

    Hi Helene,

I'm afraid i won't be able to join you, as you're a bit too far away (!) but I've been emboldened by your Events, to have a go myself. I'm a bit apprehensive - will too many people turn up? (it's a tiny garden) Will no-one turn up? (I'll feel a fool!) (and what's more to the point, I won't be able to make room for any new plants if I don't sell off some of the old ones!)

So thank you for being brave enough to do it, and fingers crossed for the weather for you this weekend, and for me next weekend!

Thank you Rachel, it is a bit scary taking the first steps like this – but I was very much encouraged by the response I got in February so here I go again :-) I was also wondering if I would get too many people signing up for my small garden, but it seems I needed not worry about that, including myself and Jeremy we will be 5 people tomorrow, and there is another 2 people who are a ‘maybe’ still. I set a limit of 20 people and I was worried I had to turn people away….

I wish I could come to your plant sale, I am sure you have plants I would be very happy to take home – not that I need any more plants to plant right now, but I find it very difficult to say no to some interesting plants!

I’ll let you know how tomorrow goes, the forecast is changing every time I look at it so I have simply stopped looking. If it rains we just have to huddle together in my shed or go inside!

Good luck to you, hope you’ll get lots of plants sold!

    Hi Helene
I am afraid I wont be able to make it today. Just come back from Glasgow to find my local community garden is having a Big Dig Day event. Wishing the best of luck today and hope the weather is good to you.

Thanks, Helene, for your encouragement: my garden is so small that if it rains, i might put up my gazebo, which would cover most of the garden! Good luck for today!

    Hi Rachel and Sally

Thanks for your well-wishes, the Meet and Swap went well today, it was cold and a bit drizzly at times, so in the end we just went inside and had a chat, but a good few plant have swapped home today!

I am hoping to arrange another open day like this in June so anyone interested in coming can already now let me know and I will get in touch when the date is set. Just send me a message to let me know you are interested in attending.

    Hi Helene

Thank you so much for the event and the fabulous plants I brought home. I think the great thing about your event, despite the weather, was how everyone came away with new, interesting plants and not a penny was spent!

More should try it: Create an event and just ask local GPS members to bring along plants they can spare. Simple.

I'll message you separately about the the other things we talked about.

Hello Helene, I thoroughly enjoyed your event and meeting new garden lovers. Please let me know when you are holding another as would love to come along and see you again. Hope you are keeping well?
    Best wishes

    Hello Lynne
Thank you for getting in touch and for asking about another swap day.
I am not very well right now so that’s why I haven’t announced another day here, but I will try to have one again when I am a bit better. You can always keep in touch by messaging me directly through my grower page.
    Take care,
    Helene
