British Red Cross Open Gardens "Pebmarsh Trail"

Past event 1-5PM Sunday 5 June 2016

Old School House, The Street, Pebmarsh, HALSTEAD, CO9 2NH

Open garden

Pebmarsh Trail includes a variety of gardens.
Snipelands is a stunning two-acre garden in a peaceful setting on the outskirts of Pebmarsh. The drive up to the garden has 36 varieties of rose and a newly planted orchard of 28 apple trees. A large lake is home to ducks, geese and other wild fowl. A traditional walled vegetable plot contains soft fruit bushes, peach and cherry trees.
At 8 Mill Lane are herbaceous borders, Mediterranean and woodland gardens, a river bank and a meadow with water features and shrub beds.
At 10 Mill Lane are mature shrubs, herbaceous borders and a fern garden under trees. There is a river bank, bog garden and a meadow with Essex hedge.
Matson Lodge is a one-and-a-half-acre garden developed for wildlife. Most trees, shrubs and plants were grown from seed or cuttings, including the catalpa bignonioides and ginkgo biloba trees. New rose beds and more sustainable planting are currently being done.
Cricks Farm is an informal, natural garden of approximately one acre, attached to a working farm in a tranquil location. It has colourful borders filled with perennials, a gravel garden and a wooded area, as well as many lilies in containers.
Brambles is a cottage garden full of perennials, established shrubs, roses, clematis, wisteria and honeysuckles. This garden has evolved around a growing family. The aim is easy maintenance, so there are many corners to sit and enjoy. There is also a small deck by a pond and a swimming pool.
The early Victorian Magnolia House is set in an acre of grounds. It has a lovely walled garden with a huge and spectacular white wisteria over an arbour plus a rhododendron and azalea bed. There is also a small Italian garden with mirrors (creating a trompe l'oeil effect) and a vegetable plot. Outside is a rose and lavender garden and an orchard that leads to a peaceful woodland walk.
The trail starts at CO9 2NH, The Village Hall. (Not The Old School House which is next door).
To enter all the gardens in the trail, buy a map at the village hall where refreshments, toilets and parking are also available.
Price £6.00 per adult, children under 12 free
Directions: East off the A131 Halstead/Sudbury road. Proceed along "The Street" to the Village Hall.
