Hi Heidi - right now in April and May is an ideal time to plant Lavender, as the soil is warming up.

Lavender tend to thrive longer in fertile, free-draining soil in full sun. If you have a heavier clay soil, you will find that improving drainage, either by working in organic matter and gravel, or mounding up where you plant, will extend the life of the plant.

    Hope that's a help.

I've planted mine in September and it seamed to take alright.

The late autumn/winter weather will have an effect on establishment. In a mild winter, autumn planting should be fine. But how will you know in autumn if it's going to be mild?!
