Can anyone help me please? I have a self set plant that opens its flower in the morning but by afternoon it has closed again.

    Hi Keith,

Looks like one of the cornflowers, Centaurea: they come in mauve/purple as well as in the familiar strong blue, and increasingly they are being sold in "wildflower" seed mixes, which often then escape from the garden.

    But I might be wrong!

It's Tragopogon porrifolius Salsify. A similar British native has the name 'Jack go to bed at noon' , It has a dandelion like flower but has those very large seed heads whish are very distinctive.
