Sempervivum arachnoideum - advice needed please

  • Sempervivum arachnoideum - advice needed please

Would someone please let me know what are the best conditions for this plant please?

I have bought several of these plants over the years and just grown it in the garden, mostly in full sun, to disappear.

I have found that this plant doesn't like wet soil Liz and up here in York I treat mine as a cactus and keep in pots, even moving them out of too much rain in summer and sheltering undercover over the winter. Good drainage is essential, so I'd find a dry sheltered spot (you are right to make sure they're in the sun as they won't grow in shade) but don't feed or over water as they thrive on neglect. Wet is more likely to kill them than the cold so work in plenty of (horticultural) grit or sand to aid drainage as it's possible they are rotting away. After flowering each individual rosette dies away but is normally soon replaced by the growing offsets so you should be able to keep them going if the conditions are right.

    Thank you Linda.
When I see this plant in little teraccota pots, just overflowing, I am envious. I have wanted to grow them like that for years. I have put them in the ground,in pots, but maybe I have watered them.
I willl buy some more and remember your advice.
