Hi,

Can anyone help at all. I have a large tub in my garden that all sorts of plants self seed. The plant self seeded last year and seems to have grown into a kind of tree sapling. It seems t have like a velvety feel to the underside of the leaves if this helps. Am I right and if so, can anyone tell me what this plant is ?

    Hi Mick,

The "usual suspects" for self-set trees/shrubs with alternate leaves are Willow, Poplar, Buddleia and Viburnum: I can't say that yours looks particularly like any of those, so maybe you could take a look around the margins of the garden and see what is growing nearby?

If you have room and time, you could leave it, and see if it flowers next year: sadly, most self set trees/shrubs are usually not all that desirable.

Having said that, I rescued a tiny sapling a while back, and it has grown up into a Bird Cherry, so that was a bit unexpected!

    Hi Rachel,
Thank you, Ive potted the plant up and will see what happens. It looks nothing like any plant i have in the garden, but i suppose saplings can look totally different from the adult plant ?

Well, some plants (Eucalyptus comes to mind) have juvenile foliage which is completely different from adult foliage.

And others will suddenly look familiar, so it will be interesting to see how big this one gets before you have that "Oh! So that's what you are!" moment.
