Cool fungus

  • Cool fungus

Just found this earth star beneath a conifer. Don't know which species but I've never found one before.
Anyone know the species?

I am no expert, but I understand they are Gasteromycetes, or 'stomach fungi', and they take that form so the outer 'petal-like' layers can push the inner sac up and clear of debris to release their spores. The whole action is activated by rain. When it is dry the fungi is closed like an onion. Great photo Jed, as it shows how the fungus needs to push clear of the twigs etc.
