Can anyone tell me the name of the large plant I have inherited in my new garden?

I'd hazzard a guess at Phormium tenax Angela.

I'd agree with Angie, looks like a Phormium.

Just for info, in case anyone is wondering, Cordylines and Yuccas both have chunky grey trunks. Phormium ("Phormia"?!) grow with just leaves, no stem or trunk, direct from the ground.

When they get too large for the space, they are very easy to lift and divide, then you can replant a couple of good sections, and pot up the many left-overs to give away or sell.

I wrote about it a while back, here, if you want to see pictures of how I did it.

    YES A PHORMIUM.
you can cut them down and they will grow back.
Not easy to cut, very fleshy. A very sharp knife perhaps.
