Mahonia Charity not flowering

  • Mahonia Charity not flowering

My Mahonia Charity has not flowered this year (it usually flowers November - January). It has produced flower spikes but there are no flowers - any thoughts as to why?

A bit of long shot but could it be that the birds got to the flower buds? I find the blue tits particularly fond of them! Although there is usually signs that they've been at them lying around on the ground underneath.

I would agree with Angie - those do indeed appear to be the cores of flowering spikes, but with no flowers. Certain small birds seem to love picking off the flower buds (not just on Mahonia) - they seem to do it for amusement more than for food. Little beasts!

Thanks both - I guess covering the plant with a net is the only solution - unsightly though.
