Basal cuttings

Spring is a great time to propagate a number of herbaceous perennials from basal cuttings. You can take them from perennials that make multiple stems from the crown, such as aster, campanula, chrysanthemum, delphinium, lupin and phlox.
Look for strong shoots, around 7.5-10cm (3-4in) long, growing from the base of the plant. Use a sharp knife to cut them cleanly from the plant, cutting close to the crown. Cutting with some of the roots will obviously assist the cutting to root.
Then treat them as softwood cuttings:
