It's that time of year again

5 days to go before the clocks go forward and we are stuck between clay soil that is too wet to cultivate properly and rapidly growing weeds. This period only lasts about a fortnight but it's the two weeks that keeps us playing catch up for two months. Forecast is for warmer weather. Bring it on.

I'd suggest covering your soil with heavy cardboard for the next three weeks to kill the weed growth somewhat. After that time apply muscle power and double dig. Also dig in plenty of organic matter and a mixture of garden sand and compost to improve the soil. My own garden is heavy clay, so I speak from experience. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comments. Stuff like this works wonders in the garden but we have 4 acres of commercial vegetable beds and I would need a lot of cardboard! After this weekend the soil is so much warmer and more friable we are going to be fine. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you need to get going as soon as the season turns. We are very behind this year because out tunnels blew down twice in the gales when they would normally be in good shape by now. All the best. Max. :)
