On my way to the dentist in Wells, Somerset, with my son I came across this, and thought I'd share it. Unusual, but why not? For a moment it quite took my mind off the next half hour!

    That's clever! Amelanchier, which has a vase shape, is also good for screening upstairs windows, without blocking all the light ... and has great autumn colour. In winter it loses it's leaves, but then you want more light then.

    Or pleached Hornbeam makes a great architectural screen with clear trunks below - but this is more of a 'block'.
