Bulbils

Lilies produce bulblets around the base of the bulb or near the base of the old flowering stem. But some lily species, such as L. bulbiferum and L. tigrinum also produce bulbils.

  • Bulbils are produced in the leaf axils on the main stems in late summer or autumn. When ripe these detach easily from the stem.

  • Once removed, press them into the surface of a pan or pot of compost, spacing 2.5cm apart. Cover with 13mm of course sand or fine grit. Keep frost free over winter, and plant out the following autumn.
