Runners

Runners are usually horizontal stems that creep along the ground and include geums, herbaceous potentillas and strawberries. They root and produce plantlets along their length and/or at their ends.

  • Thin out runners in spring or summer to encourage strong growth to produce a few, larger plants rather than than lots of small ones.
  • Fill a suitably sized pot with good potting compost and dig a hole beneath the plantlet and sink the pot in the hole. Pin the plantlet with a wire hoop onto the compost surface.
  • If the rooting plants start to produce their own runners, carefully remove these to prevent the plant diverting its strength into these runners.
  • Cut the connecting stem when the plants are fully rooted and plant them out.
