Cold frames also provide even, overall light levels. They can be used to propagate a wide range of hardy plants that don’t need any additional heat above the ambient temperature - although small paraffin heaters can be used to keep temperatures higher from autumn to spring.
Cold frames are also useful for hardening off or ‘weaning’ plants grown with warmth indoors to the outdoor conditions.
