Plants that have soft pith or hollow stems, such as Forsythia, Kerria and Sambucus, may have to be dealt with differently. Make the cuts at the nodes as normal and if the hollow stem or soft pith is exposed, seal them by touching the base of the cutting into melted candle wax. Make sure the wax is not too hot.
Alternatively, try taking heel cuttings.
